Don’t Lose Your Mind: Tips for Raising a Toddler and a Newborn

Today we have a guest post from Tara, a mom and longtime reader of this blog. It’s true that having a newborn and toddler can be daunting, but you can do it! And Tara’s tips can help.

Being a first-time parent certainly is a challenge. If you’re like most new moms, you had no idea what you were in store for, or how difficult it would be to figure out what you are doing. After all, you have this tiny little individual who is completely relying on you for survival; it only makes sense that this is a difficult job – and the most difficult job you will ever have!

However, once your little baby grows into a toddler, you consider yourself an old pro. You have your routine, you understand each other, and you know what to expect, even when he throws you a curve ball every now and again. But, just when you think you’ve got everything figured out, you find out that you are about to welcome a new little bundle to the world. Of course, this is a blessing, but many parents get a little nervous about the idea of raising a toddler and a newborn.

If this is you, don’t panic. Raising two kids becomes much more manageable with a few helpful tips; and some coffee, of course.

You’ve already become quite skilled at multitasking, thanks to your firstborn; however, with another one in the picture, you’ll have to figure out even more inventive ways to do a million things at once – but you can do it! If your newborn needs to be soothed, try rocking him while you are dancing with your toddler. If you need to go to the grocery store, wear your infant and push your toddler in the cart. Creativity is one of the best skills a mother has.

Be Willing to Adjust

It took you some time to adjust to having just one baby, and it’s going to take you some time to adjust again. You may have had this great routine when you had just one, but realize that things are definitely going to change with another one in the picture. You have to be willing to roll with the punches and make adjustments if you want happiness to reign.

Ask for Help

Although it’s easy to pride oneself on being self sufficient, when there are two kids in the picture, a little extra help can mean a world of difference.. Don’t be afraid to ask your spouse, your parents, your friends, and whomever else you are close with to lend a helping hand. Don’t think of asking for help as a sign of defeat-think of it as a means of survival!

While it may be a little nerve wracking thinking about how you are going to manage with a newborn and a toddler, trust in yourself and know that things will all work out. And don’t forget to put on your Super Woman cape and proudly show it off every now and again!
